Prestwick’s History
Prestwick Country Club opened in 1989 as a private club. A division of The Jackson Companies, many of our guests may not realize that Prestwick was found by the same family that created Ocean Lakes, the Jackson family. It was a collaboration design by renowned architect Pete Dye and his son, PB. At the course opening in 1989, PGA Tour players Jay Don Blake-Gil Morgan-Scott Verplank-Keith Clearwater played in a skins game. Joining them on the opening round were amateur Billy Jo Patton, Pete Dye, Alice Dye and PB Dye. The Gatlin Brothers lived at Prestwick and used to put on a charity golf tournament annually.
Multiple pros have played the course over the years. Senior and PGA tour player Leonard Thompson lived on property and was the Golf Director in the 1990’s. In 1996 it transitioned into a semi-private club accepting package and walk in play on a daily basis. In January 2016, Prestwick become a totally public golf course. There are no restrictions on tee times as there had been in the past.
During the year we do many charity golf tournament as well as sections events. In 2016 we will host a Carolinas Golf Association senior event, the Myrtle beach World amateur, and the Father-Son Championship to name a few. We also are the home of the local high school, Socastee High School. The Boys and Girls teams both play at Prestwick and host matches. We also host a fundraiser for their teams to raise money to pay for equipment, clothing, and registration fees throughout the year. For Junior golf, we will be hosting the Horry County Chapter for the Hootie and the Blowfish Junior Chapter in July of 2016.
About The Prestwick Course
When Prestwick first opened, the greens where Tifdwarf Bermuda. In 2012, the course was closed for three months and the greens were changed to tifEagle Bermuda which greatly enhanced the putting surface. Our superintendent has the ability to speed the greens up as much as he desires or to slow them down as he desires. Overall the putting surface has greatly improved. As well as the greens changeover in 2012, there were bunker renovations done as well as tee box renovations. The Prestwick clubhouse was renovated as well. The entire second floor underwent a complete renovation.
In the future we continue to upgrade our irrigation system and will be working on cart paths. Regular maintenance of greens, bunkers and tees will continue on a daily basis. The Golf Pros agree, Prestwick has the best greens.
From the back tees the course measures, 7086 with a course rating of 74.6 and slope of 140.
