Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out

The International Bluegrass Music Association’s (IBMA) most awarded Male Vocalist of the Year (5-time career), Russell Moore, is truly at the top of his game. Fronting one of the most popular bands in bluegrass history; Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out is celebrating nearly 25 years as one of the genres most awarded and influential groups in modern day bluegrass. All in all, the band has garnered over 50 industry accolades since their inception in 1991 including being named the IBMA’s Vocal Group of the Year seven consecutive years. Their a cappella renditions of many songs can rarely be matched and their superb instrumentation provides even more quality sound to their rich vocal blend featuring one of the most respected lead vocalists of all time. All this along with a heavy touring schedule, including many performances on the Grand Ole Opry as well as GAC and RFD channel programs, over 17 recordings to date, and a desire to present their fans with the best music possible, makes this “supergroup” one of bluegrass music’s most recognized and in-demand bands. The ensemble celebrated tremendous success with the release of their first studio project in five years in 2010 and their latest CD, Timeless Hits From The Past Bluegrassed, sold exclusively through Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, is ranked #5 on Billboard’s Top Selling Bluegrass Albums of 2013. Add it all up, and the future is looking very bright for Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out. Indeed, if one measure of success is the degree to which younger and newer musicians look to a group for inspiration, then Russell Moore & IIIrd Tyme Out are about as successful as a bluegrass group can be, for a whole generation of young pickers and singers can be heard across the country trying their hand at IIIrd Tyme Out classics.

Seldom Scene

One of the founding members, banjo player Ben Eldridge, has been with The Seldom Scene since its inception, November 2, 1971, and he still performs with the same fire and enthusiasm that characterized the band’s early days as a progressive group that took Bluegrass music to new heights. Ben is also well loved for his scat singing on fan favorite, “Lay Down Sally”. Ben turns 74 years old August 15, 2012. Dudley Connell plays a masterful guitar and provides powerful lead vocals for The Scene, which has a reputation for challenging the bounds of Bluegrass; and Connell’s musical virtuosity has pushed the group beyond these bounds. Audiences delight in Connell’s renditions of traditional songs like “Old Train”, folk ballads such as “Blue Diamond Mine”, and blues songs like “Rollin’ and Tumblin'”. Connell is a former member of The Johnson Mountain Boys.

Playing dobro for The Scene is one of the most respected dobro players on the bluegrass circuit today, Fred Travers. He is also an accomplished vocalist who brings solid lead and harmony to The Scene. Travers is a former member of the Gary Ferguson Band and the Paul Adkins Band. Fred is beloved for his tender vocals on Seldom Scene favorite’s Walk Through This World With Me, and From This Moment On.

Ronnie Simpkins plays rock-steady bass for the group and provides the bass vocals in The Scene’s quartets as well. Simpkins has been performing Bluegrass music since childhood and is a former member of The Tony Rice Unit. Lou Reid, who plays mandolin for The Scene and provides the tenor vocals, is also a former member of Ricky Skaggs Band, Quicksilver, and he currently fronts his own group Carolina. On lead, or when providing harmony, Reid’s vocals are the epitome of the powerful, “high, lonesome” tenor that is the signature of Bluegrass music.

Grasstowne

Grasstowne is a band comprised of a very well respected veteran of bluegrass music as well as four of the finest young musicians in bluegrass today. Bluegrass veteran Alan Bibey is a mastermind at the mandolin and provides vocals for the band. Adding to the band’s mix are four young and very talented players: Adam Haynes on baritone/bass and vocals, Justin Jenkins on banjo, Dustin Pyrtle on guitar and and Kameron Keller on upright bass. When you combine all five you have one of the hottest and energetic bands touring today. The band’s first two projects “The Road Headin’ Home” and “The Other Side of Towne” went to #1 and #2 respectively on the National Bluegrass Charts. “The Road Headin’ Home” remained at #1 for three months and also won the 2008 “Album of the Year” award.

Nothin’ Fancy

Nothin’ Fancy was formed as a bluegrass band in 1994 to compete in a bluegrass competition. Ever since then, they have grown in popularity, released 9 full length albums, and continue to perform at festivals all across the United States, Canada and Norway including the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, TN, the Lincoln Center in New York City, and the Birchmere in Alexandria, Virginia. The band consists of founding member Mike Andes, Mitchell Davis, Justin Tomlin, Chris Sexton and Tony Shorter. Their relentless touring schedule of over 140 dates per year has earned them one of the most loyal fan bases in all of bluegrass music. They are loved by festival-goers and bluegrass fans from the East to West Coast and abroad.

Kenny & Amanda Smith Band

Winners of the International Bluegrass Music Association’s prestigious Emerging Artist of the Year award in 2003, the Kenny and Amanda Smith Band combines gutsy, heartfelt vocals, brilliant instrumental talents and a powerful, contemporary sense of song choice and arrangement into one of the most compelling new sounds in bluegrass today.

A creation of the intensely personal musical and romantic connection between Kenny and Amanda, the band shares an all-too-rare sense of intimacy and cohesion where each musician feels an almost telepathic connection. Musicians call it being in the groove, where the group collectively accents each beat in precisely the same way. With Kenny leading the way on guitar, this band never has trouble finding the groove.
Amanda met Kenny at a Lonesome River Band concert, and the couple began dating and playing music together almost immediately. “I wouldn’t say it was love at first sight, but there was definitely something there,” she says. Their shared Christian faith, love for bluegrass and desire to perform together led them to record a debut CD, Slowly But Surely, in 2001. Recruiting several of their favorite players for the session, the album surged up the bluegrass charts on the strength of their hit song, “Amy Brown.”

Lost & Found

The Lost and Found was formed in 1973. The original lineup of the band consisted of bass player Allen Mills, banjo player Gene Parker, mandolin player Dempsey Young and guitarist Roger Handy. The band became quite popular playing bluegrass festivals, with Mills’ exceptional songwriting contributing much to the group’s fame; “Love of the Mountains,” recorded by the original lineup, has become a bluegrass standard. In addition to contemporary songs, the band also recorded more traditional fare, such as “The Man Who Wrote ‘Home Sweet Home’, Never Was a Married Man.” Most of their albums feature similar material, and the band continues to be a strong positive force in contemporary bluegrass music. The band first recorded for Outlet Records in 1975, and then achieved wider fame after it signed with Roanoke’s Rebel Records in 1982. By the mid-90s, only Allen Mills and Dempsey Young had stayed, recruiting guitarist Berry Berrier and banjo player Lynwood Lunsford as replacements. Throughout the years, Lost and Found has had many talented members of the band, including Ronnie Bowman, Shane Bartley, Greg Luck, Jody King, Ben Green along with others. As of today, the band is made up of Allen Mills on bass, Dan Wells on guitar, Ronald Smith on banjo and Scott Napier on Mandolin.

Donna Ulisse & The Poor Mountain Boys

Ulisse (pronounced You-liss-ee) has been called “one of the best singer-songwriters in bluegrass.” She has been nominated as the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Songwriter of the year for two years running. Ulisse has been blessed to have her songs recorded by the Del McCoury Band, Claire Lynch, Darin and Brooke Aldridge, The Bankesters and Nu-Blu, among others.

With her band, The Poor Mountain Boys, Ulisse regularly hits the road playing festivals, concert venues and churches, gaining new fans at every stop. Whether she is singing her own songs or those that have helped shape her as a singer and a writer, Donna Ulisse continues to make her mark as a uniquely talented artist who gets better with each new release.
